About FREDDIES

Est.1990

The HISTORY of FREDDIES...

The Bertucci family had been in the butcher business for three generations and Fred worked s a full time butcher at his father's shop all through college.

In early 1981 Fred ventured off and opened a meat market in Westchester, Illinois but contractual problems caused him to sell the business a year later.

In the meantime, Fred married and took a job as a manager at his wife, Denise's, family restaurant. From that moment on Fred could only dream about someday owning his own restaurant.

After work on Friday nights, Fred would head straight to the kitchen and start working relentlessly to create his pizza recipe he hoped he would use when he opened his own place.

Finally in 1990, after many years, thought, and preparation; the opportunity came for Fred and Denise to start their own restaurant. With two young children and more on the way, the Bertucci's who at the time were not financially stable, took a huge risk, secured a loan, found a place in Bridgeport; and FREDDIES was born, and two weeks later so was their last child. Determined to give their three daughters' a good life with many opportunities, Fred and Denise worked hard to make their dreams come true. They started out with members of both families' working day and night without pay to get the restaurant established.

The theme was homemade Italian/American fast food for hard working neighborhood families. All family members worked together to make homemade meatballs, sauces, Italian sausage, beef pizza and soups, to name just a few.

The place became and icon in this Old Italian and Irish neighborhood of Bridgeport, just south of Chicago's downtown area. A close knit family-oriented neighborhood that has given Chicago three Mayor's including the present, Richard M. Daley along with his infamous father, Richard J. Daley.

For the last fifteen years, patrons would be greeted by Fred at the counter still taking orders to this day. Fred has worked eighty hours a week since FREDDIES opened and now works along side his three daughters Christie, Stephanie and Brittany.
